Bob and Ray For the Truly Desperate

BNRToast

The shows presented here are digitized from the home recorded tapes of dedicated Bob and Ray fans. Some were produced by a person rushing to the radio, pushing the record button and holding a mike near the speaker. Others were taped fully at the time and rerecorded to edit out commercials and such later. One collector used a timer set-up and a direct connection to his tape machine. Fortunately the radio was usually tuned properly when the timer went off. These tape reels were collected and tr...

"Their finest series was probably the 1959-60 quarter-hours for CBS."---John Dunning, in "On the Air: The Encyclopedia of Old-Time Radio." Includes jewels from Wally Ballou, Lawrence Fechtenberger Interstellar Officer Candidate, the national tour of Smelly Dave the dead whale, and the classic "One Man's Family" satires, "One Fella's Family."   Hidden at the end of Shamrock tape number 37 – 6 right before the leader is a fascinating piece of Bob and Ray history. A note with this tape indicates the date is May 31, 1956. The theme music is “Bob Bob Bob and Ray Ray Ray” by Leona Anderson. The dialog seems to suggest this is a new incarnation of the show and may be the first episode. During the bits Leona herself makes a quiet and short appearance. I have teased out what I can of Leona’s improvised conversation. This recording...

Saturday July 16th, 1949. Ray mentions that the Boston Red Sox were leading the previous night 7-2, but lost 8-7 to the Tigers.  In the Friday July 15, 1949 game at Detroit, Boston was ahead 7-2 at the seventh inning stretch, but Detroit scored twice in the bottom of the seventh inning and four times in the ninth, giving them an 8-7 win.  Vera Lynn sings You're The One I Care For; this recording is available in Internet Archive's '78 RPMs and Cylinder Recordings' collection.

This show is from Thursday June 21st, 1973. There is some patter between Bob and Ray, an In The Gathering Dust and then coverage of the Gran Prix. On the Mary Backstayge episode Carmine joins the crew, Captain Larsen hits his head several times with the resulting personality changes.    A very unusual show. The recording here is also slightly unusual as two separate people recorded this show with one being slower on the stop button. The worst bits of both are used here 0:00  A talk on...

This episode has not yet been properly dated. Any information to help date the show is appreciated. Some hints from Harry Wilson; At 16:20, Bob and Ray mention that Helen Harkness had been in England to cover the coronation. The coronation of Queen Elizabeth took place on Tuesday June 2, 1953, so this episode would be after that date. According to The New York Times radio listings, the duo ended this program on WNBC (and, presumably, other NBC stations) in mid-September 1953, so this episode...

Leaving New York on the Hummingbird Express train to Seattle. Wednesday, 03/28/73  The TEAC Reel to Reel deck ran into a problem during the transcription of this tape. The tape tension motor speeds on the model A-4010S are controlled by internal resistor sliders. One of the slider contact points became loose and caused the let-out motor speed to fluctuate which resulted in intermittent voice distortion on the digitized file. Thus producing a file worthy of this venue.  There are three...

Bob and Ray Segments from Box X3 White Box tape X3 is an unknown collectors tape reel. There are several shows and bits of Bob and Ray on it. Those shows are from the late 1959 - 1961 CBS NBC period. The second file here is a more complete version of this show with partial chatter between Bob & Ray and News man Rodger Skibenes. They also interact with the traffic man, George Meade and Henry Gladstone. Several tapes went into this episode. It is almost too good for the Truly Desperate. 0:00 - The Gathering Dust (missing opening) - A visit to Miss Bessinger (Ray) from Red Boiling Springs Secret Service agent Ogen Schmidt (Bob). Is Red Boiling Springs under attack? Closes with Bob doing a...

This show is from a series of 14 Public Radio Shows recorded in the early to mid 1980's. These do not seem to be part of the other two known groups done in the 1980's.  This show may be the first episode in this series. No one in our group here at BNRFTTD specializes in the 1980's broadcasts. If you have any  information on the correct date of creation or any other information, please post it in the forum. The recording quality on this "aircheck" recordings is almost too good for...

"Monday, March 08, 1976", 0:00 Opening the big banner show with Webley, sounding a little blue over his handiwork, playing the organ.  1:05 Bob and Ray aid the misfortunate, including misguided town crier Mr. Schempl, misguided auto shopper Mrs. Dodie Pruett, and misguided arborist Otto Blakely.  6:15 A livelier musical interlude from Webley, leading into a commercial for Kava, the acid-neutralized coffee.  Kava has no connection to the stimulant drink of the same name, made from...

The first regular radio series by the master absurdist improvisors, on Boston's WHDH, between 1946 and 1951. These are the few such shows known to have survived for today's listening. Bob Elliott was a WHDH morning DJ; Ray Goulding did the news on the hour, and what began as occasional little ad-libbed buffoonery became a regular series when WHDH asked them to do 25 minutes before a Red Sox or Braves game or to go on during rain delays.
